제임스 밴 플리트 장군(1892-1992)은 제1차 세계대전, 제2차 세계대전 및 한국전 당시의 미군이었다. 그는 뉴저지에서 태어나 플로리다에서 자랐으며 미 육군사관학교(U.S. Military Academy)를 졸업하였다. 2차 대전 중 그는 연대장으로 근무하였으며, 한국전에서는 미 육군 및 유엔군 사령관을 역임하였다. 퇴역 후 1957년 뉴욕에서 미국 최초의 비영리단체인 코리아소사이어티(Korea Society)를 설립하고 “각국의 문화, 목표, 이상, 문화, 과학 및 산업에 대한 상호 이해와 공감을 바탕으로” 미국과 한국의 우호 증진에 공헌하였다. 희귀한 청화백자 작품이나 김홍도(1745-1806) 족자 등과 같은 그의 한국 도자기 및 회화 기증품은 매우 뛰어난 세계 최고 수준을 보여주고 있다.
