A "Shtetl" was a small, rural town or village in 19th century Eastern Europe in which Jewish communities lived separate from the mainstream population. In spite of the poverty and low status of most shtetlakh (pl.), Jewish culture flourished there. Baruch Mairantz reflects this vibrancy in his sculptures of individual and street life.
